Geotto’s Geothermal Direct-Use Journey

Our journey began in Eburru, where we saw an enormous paradox: geothermal steam, an abundant, clean, 24/7 energy source, was only being used to condense water in rusty drums while its heat vanished into the air.

Meanwhile, the community faced deep-rooted challenges:

Cold Climate: The highland areas are very cold, with households and farmers struggling for warmth and crop protection. No wellness or heating facilities existed.

Cooking Burden: Women spent 4–5 hours daily collecting firewood, risking their health from smoke inhalation, while losing time that could be spent on farming or income generation. Cooking beans, maize, or potatoes could take hours and lots of fuel.

Expensive Brooding: Chick rearing was nearly impossible without relying on costly firewood, kerosene, or unreliable electricity. Losses were high when power blackouts lasted a week.

Food Waste: Farmers often watched potatoes, cabbage, and other vegetables rot in the fields due to poor storage and limited market access.

Post-Harvest Losses: Solar dryers were too slow, while electric dryers were expensive and unreliable. Crops often lose colour, texture, and nutrients.

Idle Geothermal Resources: Dozens of fumaroles and geysers sat unused, an untapped clean energy goldmine in plain sight.

The First Breakthrough

In Songoroi, in partnership with Mr. Lucas, we built Kenya’s first IoT-enabled geothermal incubator.

Hatch rates: jumped from 45% to 85%

Energy use: Zero firewood, zero kerosene, zero carbon.

Reliability: 24/7 uptime, independent of grid blackouts.

This was the proof-of-concept that geothermal heat + IoT can revolutionize rural agriculture.
